Campidano
Rock climbing in Campidano
Climbing in Campidano, isn’t that a flat valley? Campidano is a large lowland spanning from Oristano to Cagliari but, guess what’s on its edges? Hills with vertical crags! ???? Therefore, the climbing crags included in this area are located on the hills that surround Campidano and separate it from other areas.
Campidano has a long and complex geological history. Most importantly it includes very different rock formations that can challenge many climbers. From the granite crags in Villacidro to the limestone of Furtei and the basalt at Monte Arci, you can climb on any rock formation. Did you ever try climbing on Basalt? Try that here and be amazed of how much you still have to learn ????
Where are the best climbing sectors in Campidano?
In Villacidro we recommend climbing in Alamo and Rifugio della Stria, which are just next to each other. Above all, they have a total of 50 routes, spanning from 5b to 7a. However, to climbers who are used to limestone, climbing on granite is a very different (and sometimes unsettling) experience. Forget jugs or in-cuts and embrace the struggle on open-hand slopers!
On the east side of the valley, Furtei is a new and promising sector. New routes are popping up every month, making it a good destination during the winter and the middle seasons.
Moving north, Monte Arci was an ancient volcano, renowned since the Neolithic age for its reserves of obsidian rocks. Its sides are made of hard basalt, and a climbing sector was and equipped in 1994. To date many local climbers added new routes, becoming a perfect climbing location any time of the year. However, climbing on basalt requires a different approach, using flat holds and balance in a totally different way.
Is it possible to climb in Campidano during the summer?
The best summer sector in Campidano is Sos Molinos. You wouldn’t believe how fresh and shady this place is! The routes are on a narrow canyon dug by an ever-flowing stream, with trees dropping shadows over the walls. Most importantly, it is possible to climb in great conditions even during the hottest summer day.
