Sicily offers a wide variety of walls and cliffs, stretching along the coast and inland, allowing for many different climbing options. There are many equipped areas, and some areas have been developed in recent years in the area of Siracusa and the Mounts Iblei, becoming increasingly popular with enthusiasts of overhangs and challenging routes.
On the northwest coast, the many limestone walls have been equipped with thousands of sport and multi-pitch routes. Since the 1980s the walls of Monte Pellegrino and Monte Monaco have been a destination for climbers from all over Europe, especially in the winter months when Sicily enjoys fantastic mild weather while the rest of the continent waits for spring to return.
San Vito Lo Capo is a town located on the northwestern coast of Sicily, known for its beautiful coastline, crystal clear waters and spectacular cliffs. Sport climbing in San Vito Lo Capo is one of the most popular activities from November to April, thanks to the presence of numerous equipped crags suitable for both beginners and experienced climbers.
The crags of San Vito Lo Capo offer a wide range of routes with varying degrees of difficulty, from the easy and short 4th grades to more challenging roofs or delicate slabs. Most of the cliffs are located in a panoramic position, overlooking the crystal clear sea and the surrounding landscape, creating a unique and evocative atmosphere.
The crags are generally composed of white, dolomitic limestone, with solid rock and good holds, which makes climbing safe and enjoyable. The immense of San Vito lo Capo is home to over 800 routes, stretching from sector Calamancina to Salinella Sud. Despite being created on the same wall, routes vary enormously in difficulty and length, with overhangs, dihedrals and slabs, requiring different climbing techniques.
In the southeastern part of the island (between Ragusa and Syracuse) rise the mountain chain Monti Iblei, furrowed by deep and fascinating canyons. The equipped routes within these areas offer a different climbing experience than those in San Vito Lo Capo, as they are often overhanging or otherwise of a higher level. Among the most fascinating destinations in this area are the very long Cava Grande canyon, and the overhangs of Cavadonna .
Ragusa's crags, including the Cava della Gisana sectors, are located on hills or mountains, with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The climbing routes are challenging and require good technique and physical endurance. In addition, there are numerous caves and canyons in Ragusa that offer caving and canyoning routes, thus integrating the climbing experience with other outdoor activities.
