Montiferru
Although a very restricted area, Montiferru has a wide variety of rock formations. From the limestone on top of the hills to the basalt at their base, and up to sandstone by the coast. Staying in Montiferu you can climb on 3 of the 4 main types of rock that are bolted up in Sardinia. Granite would be the last one, but for that, you’d have to move to Gallura or Campidano.
For some reason, the climbing sectors in Montiferru are mostly summer crags. If you have no experience with basalt, we recommend a visit to Hotel Cornus. It lays inside a thick wood, and it’s on shade all year. Routes are not very high, but basalt is not easy and requires some adjustments in your approach. Also, do not miss the Deep Water Soloing spots by Santa Caterina di Pitinurri, such as Sa Columbera and Scoglio del Genovese. They are probably the best DWS sectors in Sardinia. That’s because (apart from the beautiful landscape, of course) it only takes 5 minutes to walk to the climbing sectors and you don’t need to rent a boat or swim miles to reach the cliff. Put on your flip-flops, dip your face in a bucket filled with sun-cream and throw a towel over your shoulders, looking cool, you will have a terrific time climbing and swimming in Montiferru. Also, you don’t need to wake up before lunch, as you can climb later in the day, enjoying a beautiful sunset over the sea.
If you plan to Deep Water Solo for longer than 1 hour, we recommend having a short wet-suit. Yes, even in Sardinian summer. Your teeth will start chattering if you keep getting in and out of the water.
