Canyon Sa Tappara

Canyon Sa Tappara

Canyon Sa Tappara

The Canyon Sa Tappara is today one of the best summer climbing locations in Sardinia. The canyon unfolds north to south, where the east wall stays in the shade in the morning while the west wall goes in the shade in the afternoon.

Furthermore, the two walls are very different in climbing styles as the east wall has mostly easy and leaning routes (4 and 5 grades) while the west wall hosts the hardest routes, with an inclination that goes from vertical to slightly overhanging.

Although there are many new walls in Ulassai, the Canyon keeps its magnetism over new and old-time climbers. This is probably due to its position, easy to reach from the town and the camping ground located at the back of it.

History

The first routes in Ulassai were equipped in 2002 when Simone Sarti with Fladi Selis bolted the lower entrance of the Canyon, and Gianluca Piras bolted the sector Lecorci. Until then the only routes available in the area were located in Jerzu, on the older sectors Il Castello (1989), Palazzo d’Inverno (1991) and L’Isola del Tesoro (1992)

Following the initial start, Maurizio Oviglia kept bolting more routes on the higher end of the Canyon. The difficulty of the routes raised with many 7 grades and over. In 2003 Oviglia and Ugo Bertoni created such routes as Lacrime di Coccodrillo, Coccole e Magnesite and Niagara, the first 8a in the area.

After years of inactivity, in 2013 a group of climbers bolted over 45 routes in about 2 months, giving a great boost of interest to the Canyon. Among them were Gianluca Piras, Fabrizio Dessì and Matteo Cappa, member of the Nannai Climbing Home.

Members of Nannai filled the remaining walls available, completing the full equipment of a sector that is today the most popular and appreciated climbing sector in Sardinia.

Best season

Summer and autumn are the best seasons to climb at the Canyon Sa Tappara. It is located at 800 meters above sea level and lays in the shade for most of the day. As mentioned above, the east wall is in the shade until noon, while the west wall is in the shade from 2 pm.

Avoid coming here in the winter, as it is often cold and humid.

Access

From the main square in Ulassai, you can clearly see the canyon peeping at you from the north wall. Walk to the back of the Chiesa di Saint Antioco, pass the Lavatoio and take the bendy path in the direction of the canyon.
